Why hire a copywriter?

Have you ever considered hiring a copywriter? You may feel it’s just another expense in uncertain times, but I’m hoping I can change your mind. Just like great design, the perfect property or strong HR, it’s a relatively small investment that will bear fruit and strengthen your business.
How has the pandemic affected your business? Have you struggled? Or have you seen an increase in sales? Whichever way your cookie has crumbled, there’s no doubt you’ve had to adapt and communicate with your customers. There’s a saying, ‘a copywriter is really just a salesman with a keyboard’. Well, of course, a copywriter isn’t always a man, but it’s a pretty accurate description of their purpose. They’re there to help you sell and make you more successful. Words are immensely powerful and will make a big difference between you and your competitors. You may have great staff who can write well, but is it really the best use of their time? Does it take them away from doing what you hired them for, and adding value to your business? A professional writer will write more quickly, and a good one will listen to your goals, give a fresh perspective, and give you a far stronger voice.
Boost your online presence
To give your website the best chance to perform well in a competitive online world, it should have new content added regularly. Proper research into the right keywords, and a steady stream of well-written, informative blog content is now seen as essential to keep you in Google’s good books.
Breathe life into facts
White papers, reports and technical writing can be dry for readers. A professional writer will make these a lot more interesting, and should be able to get their head around any subject. Your internal communications are important too. Your staff is your most important asset, so why not strengthen your business culture through an interesting newsletter?
Make the most of traditional marketing
Sales letters, brochures and email marketing are only worth doing if they grab the reader and take them to a good online landing page - or straight to you! They need to have a strong narrative, be persuasive, and take your customer on a journey that ultimately leaves them with a desire to buy. What you produce needs to be concise, written well and reflect your brand!
Make sure good news has an impact
If you have something important to say, you need to communicate it strongly, and if that’s in the form of a press release, you’ll benefit from a professional touch. A copywriter writes lots of these, they know how to structure them properly, and they can do it quickly. If you work with them regularly, they will understand your goals and be very responsive.
You are the personality behind your brand
As entrepreneurs or business owners, people want to get to know you too. Do you need help with your Linkedin profile? It needs to be up to date, and kept fresh and interesting. Or, are you considering an investment in advertising? To make it worthwhile, have you thought about your message or a strong script? Or do you need help with an important speech? There are so many areas where a copywriter is a huge help.
So, how do I find a great copywriter to help?
It’s easy to search online for a copywriter. These days, they don’t have to live close to you, but good relationships matter, and so if you can find someone you get on with in person, that’s even better. Look at their online portfolio. Do you like what you see? Have they got good testimonials? Why not give them a small task as a trial?
What are they worth?
Any copywriter worth their salt will work on an hourly basis, or for larger projects will negotiate a flat fee. There are companies who offer a service where you pay for your copy by the word. That’s crazy. Would you pay a builder to build your house by the brick? You’re unlikely to get what you need this way. A professional copywriter will look at what you need, why you need it, and will let you know how long they think it’ll take them. They’ll need time to do some research, and to think. Yes, they need to think before they can write anything of quality! They’ll need time to produce a first draft, make any revisions and provide you with a final draft. The good news is it’s in their interest to work as quickly as possible, and the more you work with them, the more seamless the process will be.
Build a business to be proud of
If you still think writing your own copy is the best use of your time, I’d urge you to reconsider. Great content will get you more sales, and it’s something that’s well worth a relatively small investment. Just like other aspects of your business, if something is worth doing, it’s worth doing properly. It could make a crucial difference between attracting the right customers, and watching them go to a competitor!
